I want to explore : For Teens

The Humane Teen Club

Do you have a passion for pets? Are you between the age of 13 and 17? Would you like to learn more about dogs, cats and small animals? Then the Humane Teen Club may be for you. Each year we select 15 positive, enthusiastic teens that are interested in receiving training to become volunteers for the Seattle Humane Society.

In the Humane Teen Club you will:

• Receive training and preparation to volunteer at the SeattleHumane Society
• Explore the power of animal companionship, and the importance of the human animal bond
• Learn current best practices in companion animal care and training
• Develop leadership skills and a service ethic in a supportive environment
• Raise awareness of issues facing companion animals and explore animal welfare topics

There is a one-time charge of $150 to cover all program expenses throughout the year, but we are committed to making our programs accessible to all. Thanks to the generosity of a donor we have partial and full scholarships available based on financial need and merit.  To download a copy of the scholarship application CLICK HERE!

The Humane Teen Club meets for three hours twice a month. You should plan to devote an average of 5 hours per month in addition to the two-hour meeting and service workshops. Think carefully about your after school sports schedule, your extra curricular activities, and your homework load before making a commitment to the Humane Teen Club. Club members are allowed only two excused absences to qualify for graduation  and will be required to complete a service project on their own time.

Once you’ve completed the program you’ll be able to volunteer for the Seattle Humane Society before you are 18 years old. Please understand however, that graduation from the HTC program is not a guarantee of volunteer placement. Just as with adults, the volunteer department matches people with volunteer position openings based on their skills, their availability, and the current needs of the shelter.

Foster a Cat & Earn Service Hours!

Help the Seattle Humane Society save even more lives by opening your home temporarily to a cat in need of some TLC. All you need is a spare room and some spare time. The commitment is from two to eight weeks. Taking a cat for even a short time helps to:

• Give long timer cats a well deserved break from the shelter environment
• Help cats recover from colds in a more supportive and stress free environment
• Open up space for the never ending stream of new cats

We will credit you 3 service hours for each day of fostering. Bring school paperwork to the shelter and your foster coordinator will sign off.

If you are interested in fostering a cat, get started by emailing our volunteer department at volunteers@seattlehumane.org. Include all of your contact information and be sure to put “ Cat Fostering” in the subject line of your email. Once the Seattle Humane Society Cat Foster Coordinator contacts you, you can come in with a parent to receive training on how to provide the care your cat needs. The Seattle Humane Society is able to provide you with a litter box, cat litter, cat food, medications if necessary and other needed supplies.

Other Ways Teens Can Help The Animals

In order to have hands-on contact with shelter animals you need to join the Humane Teen Club, come to Animal Adventures Day Camp, or be 18 years of age. But there of plenty of other ways to help shelter animals and earn service hours. You can do a pet food drive, coordinate a towel and blanket collection, or host a fundraiser for the shelter. Click here to see a complete list of projects you can do to help shelter animals!

To receive credit for community service housrs, bring in your donations along with a few photographs of you for documentation and someone at the shelter will sign off on your community service hours. Click here to print a Seattle Humane Society community service time log.
