I have an animal : Hamsters
Hamsters
Hamsters are extremely curious and energetic pets. They love to exercise and explore their surroundings. The average lifespan of a pet hamster is two to three years. Hamsters are most active at sunset and sunrise. Hamsters are solitary animals and should be housed alone. Serious injury can occur if multiple hamsters are housed together. It is important to make sure to hold your hamster on a daily basis so that your pet gains confidence and remains social. Hamsters are cute, but did you know that, out of all the domesticated rodents, hamsters have the greatest tendency to bite? Hamsters do best in a household with older children or adults.
Diet
A hamster’s diet is quite varied. A balanced diet should include a combination of grain, oats and seeds that can be purchased from your local pet supply store. In addition to the daily serving of small animal diet, hamsters should also receive fruits and vegetables. Fruits and veggies should be provided in small amounts on a daily basis. You may provide your hamster with a small handful of greens such as spinach, lettuce or dandelion greens. Apple or carrot chunks can also be given in small quantities.
Health
Hamsters do not require any vaccinations. One of the most common infections observed in hamsters is wet tail. This is a bacterial infection that often results in death. Common signs of wet tail include: diarrhea, matted fur around the tail area, loss of appetite, weight loss and a hunched stance. Please take your hamster to the vet immediately if you observe any of these symptoms. Because hamster’s teeth grow continuously, it is important to provide safe items to chew on so that teeth do not become overgrown.
Housing
When purchasing a hamster cage it is important to make sure that there is no way the hamster can escape. Hamsters are the Houdini’s of small animals: if there is a way out they will find it. A hamster cage should have a solid bottom, plenty of air circulation and lots of bedding for burrowing. A good hamster habitat should also include a nesting or privacy box for sleeping. Large aquariums with a mesh lid are also an option when choosing a home for your hamster. Just be aware that aquariums do not provide as much ventilation as wire cages, and aquariums will need to be cleaned more often than a wire cage.
